Smolyan is one of most beautiful of all the Bulgarian cities. It is situated in South Bulgaria in the most picturesque part of the Rodope Mountain in the narrow valley of Cherna River, 850 - 1050 meters above the sea level. It is situated 250 km south east of the capital city of Sofia, 103 km south of Plovdiv and just 16 km south of the stunning winter resort of Plovdiv.
Smolyan become a town in 1960, after the three villages united: Smolyan, Raykovo and Ustovo, now neighbourhoods in the town.
Many well preserved houses in Smolyan are from the revival period and can be seen in all three neighbourhoods. The arch bridge is situated in Smolyan, over the Black River. It was constructed in the beginning of the XVIII century. Smolyan is also home to the biggest planetarium, the natural park "Chinara", the Rodope historical museum, and city art gallery.
The Smolyan lakes are known as "The emerald eyes of the Rodope Mountains", and acan be found just 3 km away from the city. The Smolyan waterfall which is over 20 metres high on the Kriva River is also close to the town. Pamporovo winter resort is only 10 km away from Smolyan. Close to the city, more than 20 caves can be explored; the most fascinating of the caves is Ultsata, because of its remarkable cascading lakes. This is a beautiful part of Bulgaria to visit, and would make a perfect holiday destination.
