Obzor is roughly midway between Troyan and Varna, the E-87 highway emerges from the hilly wooded terrain into a short open coastal stretch around Obzor. Despite the town's excellent location and six-kilometre long sandy beach (the largest between Golden Sands and Sunny Beach), this pleasant spot is surprisingly uncrowded with tourists even during peak season.
The origins of Obzor, which the ancient Greeks knew as Heliopolis, can be seen in the small park which is lined with columns and statuary fragments from a Roman temple to Jupiter which once graced the spot. The Romans also built a fortress in the area to protect their sea trading routes between Constantinople and the Danube. The Medieval Bulgarians constructed their own fortress nearby.
Obzor is a town to the south of the Dvoinitsa River at the foot of the easternmost mountain. The existence of mountain slopes and a long beach strip provides favourable conditions for recreation.
The best thing to do is relax and kick back on the sandy beaches of this part of Bulgaria. If boredom sets in, head six kilometres north to Byala. Founded in around the 3rd century BC, Byala today is a mix of a typical working village and tourist resort and appears more prosperous than most Bulgarian villages, undoubtedly due to the popular and thriving local wine industry. It also boasts an impressive setting with stairs that lead down to a secluded beach that curves north toward rocky Cape Atanas; to the south, another promontory separates the sandy strip from the much larger beach at Obzor.
If you travel further south of Obzor, the highway takes you 14 kilometres through open vineyards and the heavily wooded Balkan range to Cape Emine, which overlooks the impressive Bay of Nessebur. Bulgaria's stormiest cape has a lighthouse and the medieval fortress which is now in ruins and monastery. Today you will find a deserted church as the only remaining structure.
