The Costa del Sol in southern Spain is a densely populated coast of Andalucia. It stretches just over 150 kilometers and is Spain's most popular and visited tourist destinations. All year round, people come to this part of Spain in their thousands to its fine sandy beaches and calm Mediterranean waters.
The area has a mild climate and this is a major factor in enjoying the beaches and a wide variety of outdoor and water activities all year round.
Some of the Costa del Sol's most popular destinations include Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Torremolinos, Marbella, Estapona and Puerto Banus. Their miles of beautiful fine sandy beaches and excellent weather have kept tourists coming back year after year.

The Costa del Sol is one of the most developed parts of the coast. Many of the towns have been developed and modernized. The nightlife in the Costa del Sol is very lively and colorful, with many bars and restaurants. Other attractions include a zoo, water parks, casinos, bullfights and amusement parks like Tivoli World.
This coastline is often nicknamed "The Costa del Golf" as it boasts one of the highest representation of first class golf courses. There is also plenty of entertainment for families and children with, theme parks, safari parks, karting, and many stunnung landscaped public gardens. The younger generation enjoys places like the Puerto Marina and the popular '24 hour square' of Benalmadena, as well as in Marbella and Puerto Banus. These places are trendy and hip, these bars and clubs don't get up and alive until near midnight, and most of them stay open until the early hours of the morning.
The Costa del Sol's history dates back many years to the Phoenicians. From that time, the coast has been inhabited by Greeks, Romans and Moors, all of whom have influenced the coast and left their mark. The Costa del Sol is often in the shadow of its neighbour Seville, the Costa del Sol and the Malaga province are home to some of the most excellent Flamenco, bullfighting, and a number of the best tapas restaurants in Spain.
Many of the coastal towns and villages have developed nice resorts but nevertheless preserved their archaic charm and magnetism. The small communities hidden in the highlands remain rugged, and have a real charm, and are appealing for the more adventurous traveller.
The Eastern Costa del Sol has a 54 km stretch of coast east of the city of Malaga (the capital of Malaga province). Though its quite highly developed from a real estate viewpoint, its not anything like the developments on the western Costa del Sol.
From Malaga eastwards are great cliffs of up to 200 meters. This is where the Sierra Almijara joins the sea. This part of the coast area ends on a coastal plain called Mara, with beautiful landscapes and traditional agriculture surrounding it.
Also on the coast is Nerja, growing rapidly, much of eastern Costa del Sol's accommodation for tourists can be found in the town of Nerja.
The beaches of The Eastern Costa del Sol are Calahonda and Calas Ocidentales in Nerja. Playa Calahonda is very popular beach among the tourists and locals owing to its picture postcard setting. Before heading down to the beach, the view from Balcon de Europa is something not to miss.
In addition you can also find El Maro, at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol. Expansive, isolated coves are in abundance, and some can be reached by car, others only by foot. It's the perfect getaway if you're in searching for a great peaceful and relaxing holiday.
The Costa del Sol's infrastructure is well planned, especially with the new Autopista del Sol (motorway) granting access from Malaga to as far as Estapona and beyond to Gibraltar. For those tourists who want to explore a little further inland, there are great links between the towns of Sevilla, Granada and Cordoba, all are easily accessible.
The International airport has many regular flights to all the major cities and is located only 10 minutes from Malaga City, and within half an hour by car from most other popular resorts on this most popular coast.
The Western Costa del Sol has an amazing 100 km coastline that begins at Malaga and stretches westward. This part of the Costa del Sol is highly built up both in property and infrastructure, attracting a large number of local and international tourists.
The stunning town of Ronda is on a towering plateau nestled away in the mountains 48 km inland from Marbella. Ronda is one of the prettiest and most attractive towns of Costa del Sol and is a popular day trip for tourists with its great history. The town of Ronda is also famous for El Tajo, the plunging river gorge that divides the medieval from the 18th-century parts of the town. This spectacular gorge has an amazing stone bridge that can seen driving along the motorway as you head towards Gibraltar.
