The Costa Calida, which translates to the "Warm Coast" has an amazing 250 km of Mediterranean coastline located in the province of Murcia. The coastline extends roughly from El Mojon in the north to the southern resort of Aguilas, the region to the north of the Costa Calida is called the Costa Blanca "White Coast" and the region to the south is known as the Costa Almeria.
The Costa Calida is known for having a hot Mediterranean climate with high average temperatures and low rainfall, hence the name 'Warm Coast'.
The most fascinating features on the Costa Calida is the massive saltwater lagoon known as the Mar Menor "Little Sea" which is an impressive 170 km2 and is the largest in Europe. La Manga, known locally as "The Sleeve" seperates both the Mar Menor Sea from the rest of the Mediterranean Sea. La Manga is one of the best and most famous resorts on the Costa Calida, known for great water sports. La Manga Del Mar Menor itself is some 22 km long and in some places no more than 100 metres wide.
The Mar Menor is well known for being some 5 degrees warmer than the surrounding Mediterranean Sea, this makes the beaches around the Mar Menor very popular with holidaymakers and locals. The Mar Menor is also shallow, which makes it the perfect holiday destination for those with small children.
The Costa Calida boasts many great towns, such as Lo Pagan which can be found on the Mar Menor coastline, and is famous for its healing mud baths, people form all over the world visit try out its beneficial effects. The mud baths at Lo Pagan are protected and are free to use and enjoy. You will also find The Natural Park of the Salinas of San Pedro del Pinatar close by, this is also a protected area.
The Costa Calida has two important coastal towns, Cartagena and Mazarron, Cartagena in particular has a very long and interesting history going back some 3,000 years. It was said to be an important city during Roman times and some remains of many Roman buildings can be found throughout the city, including a stunning Roman theatre. Cartagena has one of the most important ports on the Costa Calida as its home to one of the Spanish naval bases.
Puerto de Mazarron and Mazarron itself are very popular and vibrant summer time destinations, Puerto de Mazarron has great nightlife, and it also boasts a superb fishing port. In Mazarron town you can find the ruins of Velez Castle.
At the southern end of the Costa Calida you can find the town of Aguilas, it was formerly an ancient Roman fishing village. In the 19th Century Aguilas became an important mining town, which can still be seen today. To the north of Aguilas on the Coast Calida is the town of Lorca a very interesting place to visit.
