COSTA BLANCA NORTH & COSTA BLANCA SOUTH
The Costa Blanca is situated in south-east Spain. Tourists flock to this wonderful part of Spain to take advantage of the sun, the sea and its great beaches, it would be a mistake to think that this is all the Costa Blanca has to offer. There are many great places of interest to visit and enjoy on the Costa Blanca North and Costa Blanca South.
The Costa Blanca (White Coast) comprises of approximately 200 km of coastline stretching from Gandia in the north (Costa Blanca North) to Pilar de la Horadada in the south (Costa Blanca South), it also has a large number of mountains, sierras, river valleys and natural parks. The area to the north of Gandia is called the Costa del Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast) and the area to the south of Pilar is known as the Costa Calida (Warm Coast).
The entire Costa Blanca North and Costa Blanca South regions have a rich and distinguished history and many artefacts have been found dating back to the Neolithic Era. The Costa Blanca lies in a strategic position on the Mediterranean coastline; the Costa Blanca has been invaded and occupied by many civilizations including Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Carthaginians and Moors. Each civilization has left its own identity on the Costa Blanca region and each has resulted in significant cultural and religious consequences for the Costa Blanca population.
The Costa Blanca North and Costa Blanca South have been invaded during the 20th Century - that being tourism, and this has probably resulted in the most rapid and dramatic changes in the Costa Blanca's history. A massive amount of re-development has taken place over the last few years and the economy of the region has undergone sweeping changes.
Many towns and villages on the Costa Blanca which formerly relied on fishing, agriculture and salt production now rely almost entirely on tourism and other related tourism industries and many new jobs have been created, increasing the wealth of the region and the local population.
The main attraction to the Costa Blanca for tourists (especially many north Europeans) is of course the wonderful climate, and its said that the Costa Blanca has over 300 days of sunshine each year and very low rainfall, its the perfect location or a relaxing summer holiday or a very well earned winter break.
Sunshine is virtually guaranteed from May through to October, so it is not necessary to confine visits to the more popular months of July and August. In the months of December and January the Costa Blanca enjoys some wonderful sunny days, so it is a great place to take a break away from the dismal weather of the UK.
The Costa Blanca gets very hot during the summer months of July and August with temperatures soaring into the 40's, and for some this is simply too hot. If visiting during these months make sure you bring plenty of high factor suntan lotion for yourself and particularly for those with young children. May and October are usually beautiful and sunny but without the uncomfortable high temperatures, June and September can also be very hot.
The Costa Blanca North and Costa Blanca South have some of the best beaches in Spain and they are usually very clean and well cared for, and more importantly very safe. There are a large number of 'blue flag' beaches on the Costa Blanca and these are normally cleaned every day and you will often see life-guards on duty during the summer months. Some of the most popular beaches can get very busy during July and August as many Spanish take their holiday in August, but if you take some time to explore the Costa Blanca, you may find quiet and isolated beaches even during the busy summer season.
The Costa Blanca has much to offer holidaymakers and tourists of all types, fine beaches for sun lovers, many ancient towns and cities for culture lovers and wonderful natural parks for nature lovers.
