Galicia is often known as the land of a thousand rivers, and is located in the northwestern corner of Spain, to the north of Portugal. Galicia has a wild Atlantic coastline and is characterised by high cliffs and deep fjord-like estuaries, known as rías. Galicia has two distinct coastal areas, known as Rías Altas, which are along the north-facing coast and Rías Bajas, facing out towards the western Atlantic.
Inland Galicia is typically quite mountainous; these are much smaller than the Pyrenees which are further east, generally being less than 2,000 metres high.
The region is divided into four separate provinces - Ourense, Pontevedra, Lugo and La Coruña and the population is sparsely populated, only seven of the area's towns have more than 50,000 inhabitants. Vigo has a population of around 300,000 people, making it one of the largest non capital cites in Spain.
There is a big difference between the economy of the western coastal area of Galicia and the rest of the region. The west has a strong growing population, with a big fishing industry and the area's major manufacturing concerns, including shipbuilding in Vigo and Ferrol. The other remaining parts, however, especially the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, are still dependent on subsistence agriculture, with a decreasing population.
Galicia is one of Spain's leading producers of milk and eggs. The development of the two airports at La Coruña and Santiago de Compostela, though, has been a huge factor in the large increase in tourism in recent years and this is beginning to have a beneficial effect on the economy.
Galicia has four genuine seasons, with temperatures ranging from about 5 degreea in the winter to the low 20´s in the summer. In the mountainous areas of Galicia it can be significantly colder in the winter. The Spanish know Galicia to be 'the rainy region'; in fact, it is one of the few places where you can expect to see rain even during the summer months. Galicia has less rain than in the UK but it is still wet enough to be easily Spain's 'greenest' countryside. The Galician summer climate has traditionally attracted many Spanish tourists who are keen to get away from the hot temperatures on the southern coasts.

These diverse habitats are also home to wild wolves, chamois, and a unique species of fallow deer, golden eagles and a special breed of Celtic mountain pony known as the Asturcon.
Traditional farming methods are still widely used in Asturias and the region's remote mountain villages safeguard a way of life which has not changed for many centuries. The village of Bulnes, in the Picos de Europa, until recently was only accessible by mule track, then in the year 2000, ts splendid isolation came to an end with the opening of a new funicular railway.
In Asturias you will find much evidence of prehistoric man's existence, with numerous cave paintings and burial chambers found throughout the region. Some of these important archaeological finds date back an amazing 100,000 years. The caves of Tito Bustillo near the pretty fishing port of Ribadesella are a popular with tourists and the Spanish alike.
