Balchik is a town and seaside resort, situated terrace like on a small bay on the Black Sea Coast, 31 km north of the popular Varna, 37 km south-east of Dobrich and 500 km east from the capital Sofia. Balchik is third in significance Bulgarian port after Varna and Bourgas, the port is used for medium size passenger and trade vessels. Balchik has a population of over 13,500. Balchik sprang to life towards the end of the 6th C. B.C. as the ancient Greek colony Crunoi.

After the Balkan War ended in 1913 Balchik was included in the territories of Romania and not Bulgaria. The town started to turn into a luxurious resort at that time. After 1940 Balchik was again included in Bulgarian territory. It has more than 200 tree species, many flowers, boasting of a unique collection of cactus plants. There are said to be more than 3000 rare and exotic species of plants in the botanic garden. It is now part of the teaching facilities of the Sofia University. The whole complex was named Tenha Vuva (Quiet Nest).
The Art Gallery of the town is very interesting, as well as the local museum. The coastal alley, which is 4 km long, is a nice place to take a stroll, so are the harbour and the small streets around this area. There is a small ethnographic museum and a magnificent old church called St. Nikola Church. The Revival complex with the old school in the town is very well preserved. Apart from many big restaurants in the palace, in the big hotels and downtown, there are quite a few small private restaurants, coastal stalls offering fantastic seafood, pizzas, spaghetti and all other kinds of European cuisine.
Near Balchik tou will find the area of Touzlata which is located 4 km east of the town and is well known for its curing mud. A spa centre was built here beside the two lakes, which have been formed by old landslides. At the bottom of the lake is black hydrogen sulphide, it receives patients suffering from joint disorders. A large recreational complex, with many villas, bungalows and a camping site are built here. There is a mineral spring with the water temperature reaching up to 31 °C.
Balchik is close to, two big camping sites - Sandrino Camping and Belia Bryag Camping. They offer various activities for tourists, rest, water sports, clubs, bars, numerous bungalows, and stalls for sea and continental food.
15 kilometres south west of Balchik, you will find the village of Obrochishte, with its well preserved fortress dating back many years to the early Ottoman rule.
