Ahtopol's name dates back from ancient times. In past years it was a Thracian settlement, later on the Romans took over the town and called it Perontikus. The now existing town of Ahtopol was rebuilt after a massive fire in 1918 when everything was destroyed.
An interesting tourist attraction is the Church "Assumption" and "St. Yane" monastery. Malka papia is a peak in Strandja Mountain which is soaring above the resort.
Four kilometres south of Ahtopol is the magnificent mouth of Veleka River. Close to it is the small village of Kosti, famous for the Nestinarski dances.
Varvara village is 3 kilometres north of the site. It has become a favourite sport for divers, because of the stone underwater cavities and reefs, formed by shells and many other water species.

South to the border tourists can enjoy the beautiful beaches of Sinemorets, Silistar and Rezovo.
There is regular bus and minibus transport to Troyan which passes through most of the towns and villages in the southern part of the coast and Sinemoretz and Rezovo to the south.
