Rental Scams
BEWARE OF RENTAL SCAMS
When you're receiving enquiries for your holiday home, it's very important that you're aware of how to spot fraudulent, or scam, emails from supposed holidaymakers.
Most of the enquiries recieved through our website are from genuine holidaymakers looking to book holiday accommodation, but you still need to be vigilant when checking and responding to your enquiries.
Fortunately most rental scam attempts are very obvious and can be spotted immediately. They normally contain some of the following:-
-
The holidaymaker enquiring asks to pay by cheque, sends too much money and asks for a refund of the difference.
-
The enquiry is written in poor English and overly formal; however, please note that you may receive legitimate enquiries from a holidaymaker for whom English is not their first language.
-
The enquiry may be for a noticeably long period of time.
-
The enquirer wishes to pay by Western Union, bankers draft or cashiers cheque.
-
Look out for generalised enquiries i.e. "I'm looking to rent your house / apartment / hotel / villa..." It demonstrates a mass e-mail.
-
Some rental scammers use over-enthusive explanation of their title or profession (Dr. Hon. or Lord etc) or that there are very religious.
-
Use a free email account that can't be traced, normally hotmail or yahoo email accounts.
-
The mention of a rental apartment in the enquiry when your property is clearly stated as a villa.
-
The email all in CAPS, without any punctuation.
-
If the enquirer agrees to book your property and sends you a copy of their passport and then asks you for your passport details along with your bank account details.
Remember:- Always ask for a telephone number - and phone them on it. Never give out your bank details or passport details to anyone who you are not reassured is genuine. If you are suspicious of any email enquiry through our site please contact us.
